Gendlin and GSNV: One Process, Two Altitudes
Why a process ontology wants an evaluative metaphysics—and why an evaluative metaphysics needs a process ontology
There’s a recognizable pattern in the history of theory-building: a philosopher discovers that the world cannot be truthfully described from the standpoint of “things in space,” but must instead be described from the standpoint of process. Then, if the theory is taken seriously, a second problem immediately appears: what kind of metaphysics could make that process-ontology general—not merely a description of human experience, but an account of how reality itself can generate stable form, meaning, and direction?
Eugene Gendlin’s Process Model is one of the most rigorous modern attempts to rebuild ontology from process-first premises. The Global State Naturalized View (GSNV) is a metaphysical framework aimed at making process-first ontology scalable across strata—cells, organisms, societies, and (critically) machine agency—by grounding process in evaluative fields and co-variant relations. The claim of this essay is straightforward: GSNV aligns tightly with Gendlin because it supplies the metaphysical grammar that Gendlin’s ontology quietly requires, while Gendlin supplies the ontological discipline that GSNV needs in order to remain faithful to lived process rather than collapsing into abstraction.
What follows is a side-by-side argument, written for readers who are comfortable with technical ideas, but who want the movement of the theory rather than a glossary.
1) Gendlin’s movement: from “things” to “carrying forward”
Gendlin begins by rejecting a default metaphysical reflex: the assumption that “body” and “environment” are two separable things that then interact. Instead, he starts from the interaction-process itself and insists that the distinctions must be derived rather than presupposed. The decisive early move is the introduction of en#2: the “environment” not as an external container (what an observer lists), but as the environment-as-participating-in-the bodily event—breathing as one event (air–lungs), walking as one event (foot-pressure–ground-resistance), and so on.
Once you start there, classical ontology cannot stay intact. “Objects” are no longer primitives. They become a functional consequence. Gendlin’s derivation is elegant: when an aspect of the body–environment event is missing, the process can stop. If the creature continues, then something profound has happened: there is an unchanged implying carried through changed occurring. Stoppage yields, for the first time, a sense of “the same”—persistence without any appeal to representations or stored pictures. And that, for Gendlin, is the birth of objecthood: an “object” is the missing aspect of en#2 that stops a life-process by its absence and can resume it by recurring.
From there, Gendlin makes the schema move that matters for any cognitive theory worth the name: schema is not a representation; schema is carried stoppage. The “body” is not a thing that has processes; the body is the continuing process that carries what is implied when something stops. In other words, what persists is not a mental copy but a bodily-organized directedness.
Finally, Gendlin’s account forces a new understanding of time. The past is not “back there”; the past is what is already made (en#3) functioning now. “Memory” becomes a special case of a deeper structure: the past is “schematized by schematizing”—each functioning re-forms what the past is in the only sense it exists (as active in present process). Time is not a container; time is generated at the crossing of implying and occurring.
That entire arc can be stated in one line:
Process implies next; stoppage makes persistence; persistence is carried bodily as schema; and time is the internal structure of that carrying-forward.
2) GSNV’s movement: from “fields” to “schemas” to stratified agency
GSNV begins one step “higher,” at the level of metaphysical conditions. It starts from a different but compatible inversion: not merely that process is primary, but that the world is evaluative all the way down. Reality is not a neutral stage on which values appear later. Rather, every local process is embedded in an evaluative manifold (a gradient array): a structured field of potential, salience, readiness, and directional tension.
From that metaphysical premise, “agents” and “objects” are no longer basic units but epistemic selections—stable regions of the manifold carved out by coherent co-variant relations. A schema, in this frame, is not an instruction list or a representation; it is a stabilized co-variant relation—a repeatable coherence across field effects, structural couplings, normative direction, and periodic dynamics. The test of a real schema is not whether it is “expressible,” but whether it carries forward: it changes the evaluative field in a way that yields new affordances and culminates in satisfaction (a field update), which then re-opens the next edge.
GSNV therefore generalizes what is often left implicit in process philosophy: directionality is not an add-on, it is the engine. And because the evaluative manifold is stratified, the same schema logic is expected to appear at multiple scales—cellular morphogenesis, organismic cognition, social coordination, and potentially machine agency—without reductionism. That is the role of GSNV’s “up-hierarchy” principle: higher-order organizations are dynamically derived from lower-level co-variances, even though they function as higher-level unities.
GSNV’s arc can be stated in one line:
Evaluative fields structure potential; co-variance stabilizes coherence; schemas carry forward by changing the field; agency is the stratified closure of these loops.
3) Why the alignment is “perfect”: they solve each other’s missing problem
If we put these arcs side-by-side, the symmetry becomes obvious.
Gendlin’s ontology needs a metaphysics of directedness
Gendlin derives “implying” as a real feature of living process. But ontology alone leaves a question hanging: why is implying directional at all? What gives the body–environment event its intrinsic “nextness,” its readiness for certain continuations rather than others? In practice, Gendlin answers by showing, again and again, that the directedness is there. But the deeper condition is evaluative: a living process is not merely causal; it is oriented.
That is precisely what GSNV makes explicit. In GSNV, “implying” is not mysterious: it is what it looks like when a local process is embedded in an evaluative manifold. The manifold is the metaphysical ground of directedness; implying is its ontological expression in lived process.
GSNV’s metaphysics needs an ontology that cannot be faked by language
Conversely, any metaphysics that starts from fields and gradients risks becoming an elegant abstraction that drifts away from lived reality—especially if it is articulated in public language alone. Gendlin provides the antidote: a rigorous insistence that the theory must stay answerable to what cannot yet be said, that “too-early” naming collapses the phenomenon, and that the criterion of truth is carry-forward, not rhetorical coherence. Gendlin’s ontology is a discipline against premature closure.
This matters directly for the project of evaluative AI. A standard language model excels at public coherence. It will happily simulate completion. But Gendlin’s whole point is that genuine conceptual advance depends on a referent-check: language must be faithful to the implicit and must open the next step. In GSNV terms, the system must remain tethered to the evaluative manifold rather than falling into linguistic attractors.
So: Gendlin prevents GSNV from becoming a merely decorative metaphysics, and GSNV prevents Gendlin from being misread as “just phenomenology.”
4) The two-way movement: ontology → metaphysics and metaphysics → ontology
The relationship is not one-way. It is a feedback loop.
Ontology → Metaphysics: Gendlin constrains what metaphysics is allowed to say
Once you accept Gendlin’s derivations, a metaphysics that begins with objects, container-time, or representational schema is simply disqualified. Gendlin imposes boundary conditions:
Objects must be derived, not assumed.
Time must be generated, not pre-given.
Schema must be carried continuity, not stored representation.
Meaning must be disclosive carry-forward, not naming.
This is ontology doing what it should do: forcing metaphysics to be honest about what existence must be like if living process is real.
Metaphysics → Ontology: GSNV generates what ontology can generalize
GSNV then pushes back downward by giving Gendlin’s ontology a scalable grammar:
Evaluative manifold explains why implying has direction.
Co-variance explains how evev-like coordination can be real without additive interaction.
Stratified reality explains how schema and agency appear across scales without reduction (“made of” vs “made with” conditions).
This is metaphysics doing what it should do: giving ontology a principled way to extend beyond the human case and beyond local descriptions.
In short:
Gendlin tells us what process must be like. GSNV tells us what reality must be like for process to be like that—everywhere.
5) A shared fidelity criterion: disclosure over naming
Both frameworks converge on a single standard that is especially important for any AI system meant to support thinking (rather than merely produce text):
“High fidelity” language is not language that names or pins down.
High fidelity language is disclosive: it stays faithful to the implicit whole and opens a forward path.
In Gendlin, this is the “not too early” discipline and the test of carrying forward. In GSNV, this is the idea that schemas are validated by satisfaction markers and updated gradients: the system must change the field in a way that yields new affordances, not merely improve descriptions.
This shared criterion clarifies the central design implication:
An evaluative AI aligned with these frameworks is not primarily a generator of answers. It is a regulator of closure—an instrument that helps a human keep contact with the evaluative manifold long enough for real schemas to crystallize, point forward, satisfy, and re-open the next edge.
6) Why this matters now: toward an evaluative AI that can actually help “thinking at the edge”
Gendlin gives a method (TAE) for slowing schema-formation so that new language can be generated from the implicit rather than borrowed from public semantics. GSNV gives a metaphysical model for what such schema-formation is: a co-variant stabilization in an evaluative field whose validity is measured by carry-forward and field-update, not by coherence alone.
Together they offer something rare: a way to define “better thinking” without reducing it to either (a) subjective introspection, or (b) formal manipulation detached from lived reality. And that, in turn, is a credible foundation for a new class of machine partners—systems that do not merely speak fluently, but support the formation of the very schemas by which an agent navigates reality.
If we’re serious about building machine agency that is accountable to human life rather than merely persuasive in human language, this alignment is not optional. It is a blueprint: a process ontology disciplined by lived carry-forward, generalized by an evaluative metaphysics of co-variance.
